There was a huge question in Tamil film industry that, who is going to replace Kannadasan. Kannadasans poetic phrases have moved Tamil masses and he has touched every single Tamilian by his songs. He bound Tamil folks by his songs for MGR and Sivaji Ganesan. His peotic expressions were praised by all in Tamil film industry. So people thought that, there wouldn’t be a replacement for Kannadasan. But, then ‘Idhu oru pon maalai pozhudhu’ song from ‘Nizhalgal’ changed people’s thought. "Vaanam enakkoru bothi maram, naalum enakkathu saethi tharum; oru naal ulagam neethi perum, thirunaal nigazhum thaethi varum, kaelvigalaal vaelvigalai naan seivaen." these lines awakened many youngsters. His poetic anger was the voice of many. His lyrics widened the imagination of Tamils. It is a responsibility of a poet to educate and enhance the imagination and knowledge of his/her society. Vairamuthu has enriched this society with his songs. “Mugilinangal alaigirathey mugavarigal tholainthanavo mugavarigal thavariyathaal azhuthidumo athu mazhaiyo! Neela vaanilae velli odaigal podugindrathey enna jaadaigal vinveliyil vithaithathu yaar navamanigal…” His metaphors in this song were unimaginable until then. We know why it rains, we would have studied in science how rainy clouds form and condense. We would have seen a small experiment with a glass of water covered with cloth or a plastic sheet exposed to sun. But in this song he widens his imagination; he comes up with a new poetic story, how it rains. this poetic sense made many scholars look at him. Poets are found of moons if we go around the world reading all literature we cannot find any literature skipping moons beauty. But, only after Vairamuthu, Tamils came to know a variety of moons, ‘Vennila’ ‘Ponnila’ ‘Vellinila’ ‘Paalnila’ ‘Manjal nila’ ‘Ilaiya Nila’ and so on. His ‘Nila’ songs have expressed a lot of emotions. His contribution wasn’t limited within Tamil cinema, he extended his hands. His contribution to Tamil literature is very important. For ‘Kallikaatu idhikaasam’ he was awarded Sahitya Akedami Award. His portrayal of a poor farmer family touched many souls. Karuvaachi Kaaviyam was yet another touching story of a helpless village girl. His country feel has made many Tamils to connect with Vairamuthu. More than any award he has acclaimed peoples recognition as a poet writer novelist lyricist and Tamil scholar. We wish Vairamuthu all success on his birthday.
