Just a day ago, Aiyaary starring Sidharth Malhotra and Manoj Bajpayee hit the big screen. With a delay of two weeks, the film has been in the midst of a few controversies. Courtesy, the film has been inspired by several real life incidents. And now, reports have it that the film is banned in Pakistan. Aiyaary, we hear, has failed to get clearance for release in Pakistan. Readers may be aware that the film’s premise is set against the backdrop of Indian Army. And hence, it seems that this has proved to be a bone of contention for the neighboring country. Being an Indian patriotic film, Aiyaary falls next in line amongst the slew of Indian patriotic films that have been banned in Pakistan.

The development proves to be a third for film maker Neeraj Pandey. The director has made two other films in the past under a similar genre, namely Baby and Naam Shabana. Both have failed to receive a clearance for release in Pakistan. Both Baby and Naam Shabana touch upon the defense and intelligence mechanism of India. On the other hand, this is considered to be a subject that has been disapproved for showcase in Pakistan.

Aiyaary brings to celluloid three facets of the Indian Army. One is that it gives insights into the battle ground defense mechanisms. Besides that, it also showcases the intelligence and bureaucratic decision makings of the Indian Army. Apart from this, the film was recently also in the news for exposing the Adarsh scam. There were reports stating that the film has brought to light many aspects of this scam. It revolved around the involvement of many bureaucrats and high profile military officials.

As for the film, Aiyaary features Manoj Bajpayee and Sidharth Malhotra in lead roles as mentor and protégé. Also, Rakul Preet Singh plays Sidharth’s love interest. Besides the trio, the film also stars Pooja Chopra, Naseeruddin Shah, Anupam Kher, and Vikram Gokhale. Produced by Shital Bhatia, Dhaval Jayantilal Gada, Motion Picture Capital, the film releases worldwide on February 16, that is today.

Know why Aiyaary banned in Pakistan?

Aiyaary has of late been in news for its delay in release yet again. This time around, the film was supposed to be screened for the Defence Ministry. The reason initially given was that the film dealt into military conspiracies. Now, reports state that the film has briefly touched upon real life incidents like the Adarsh Housing scam.

For the uninitiated, Adarsh Housing society was a 31 storey building built in prime area of South Mumbai, Colaba. The flats were specifically said to be dedicated to war widows and Defence personnel. But soon it resulted in the exposing of a major corrupt conspiracy. It involved everyone from the politicians to high profile military professionals who had manipulated rules and documents. From zoning to floor space index to membership, these authorities scammed to purchase these properties which were sold at much lower prices than market rates.

Aiyaary features many references made by the cast of the film towards this case. With Pooja Chopra referring to it as Colaba plot, there are also dialogues made by Naseeruddin Shah. The latter in fact speaks about a certain plot that was made for wives of martyred soldiers. He also has a dialogue that says, “Kha jayenge neta aur neta ke chamche.”

It is being said that like Adarsh scam, many other scams are a part of the film. However, it has been asserted that no major changes have been suggested by the Defence Ministry. There are only four minor changes that the makers were asked to make. Now they are all heaving a sigh of relief after the film received green signal to be screened.

The CBI investigation on the case continues despite the fact that the scam was uncovered in 2010. It was followed by the resignation of the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ashok Chavan. Besides him, names of three other Chief Ministers too were said to be a part of the scam. That included namely Sushilkumar Shinde, Vilasrao Deshmukh and Shivajirao Nilangekar Patil. Besides them urban development ministers Rajesh Tope and Sunil Tatkare too were said to be a part of the scam along with 12 other bureaucrats. As for the film Aiyaary, it is now all set to release next week, that is, on February 16.
